Imperial County is one of the most cash-dependent economies in California, and one of the most poorly served by ATM operators. Agriculture, a major border crossing at Calexico and long distances between bank branches combine to make reliable on-site cash access genuinely valuable rather than merely convenient.
Calexico's border retail sees constant cross-border foot traffic where cash is the default rather than the fallback, and machines there run volumes that surprise operators used to coastal markets. El Centro, Brawley, Imperial and Holtville support the standard independent retail mix — markets, restaurants, gas stations, salons — usually with no ATM in the building. The valley also hosts a substantial seasonal event calendar, and the winter off-road season at Glamis brings in a recreation crowd that arrives with a plan to spend cash and no plan for where to get it.
